Consent tiers

Every contact in CartonCrew (volunteers, requesters, donors, signup attendees) has a consent tier that controls which kinds of email they can receive.

Who this is for: anyone composing email or running a campaign.

The tiers

TierReceivesTypical example
NoneNo marketing or campaign email; transactional only (e.g. their own event signup confirmation).A request submitter who didn’t tick anything.
CampaignCampaign emails ABOUT the program they’re touching, plus all transactional.A volunteer for a specific event — gets updates about that event.
MarketingAnything — campaigns, marketing newsletters, transactional.A donor who opted into newsletters.

A campaign-tier contact getting a marketing newsletter is a regulatory red flag (CAN-SPAM, GDPR). CartonCrew refuses to send marketing-tier campaigns to consent=Campaign or below.

  • Volunteer signup — opt-in checkbox on the public signup form (defaults to Campaign).
  • Donor recordings — set when the donor record is created.
  • Request submitter — captured on the request form (defaults to None).
  • Imports — explicit field in the CSV importer.

Common issues

  • A recipient was filtered out at send — they’re below the campaign’s required tier. Either change the campaign’s tier (if appropriate) or update the contact’s consent on their own record.
  • Want to upgrade a contact’s tier — open their record → Consent → pick the higher tier → save. CartonCrew records the change in the audit log with timestamp + actor.
