Item categories
Item categories shape how people request items on your public request form. Each category can optionally ask for a clothing or shoe size. The list is editable per-organization.
Who this is for: anyone with requests.manage.
Default categories
The first time you use Requests, your organization is seeded with a starter list:
| Category | Size mode |
|---|---|
| Toys | No size |
| Clothes | Clothing size |
| Gift Cards | No size |
| Shoes | Shoe size |
| Food | No size |
| Books | No size |
| Other | No size |
You can rename, reorder, add to, or delete any of these.
Size modes
Each category carries one size mode, which controls whether the public form asks for a size when that category is chosen:
- No size — no size dropdown.
- Clothing size — shows a clothing-size dropdown (infant age bands through adult letter sizes, e.g. Newborn, 2T, M, XL).
- Shoe size — shows a US shoe-size dropdown (infant/toddler through adult, e.g. Baby 1, Youth 3, US 9).
How the public form uses categories
On the public request form, items are grouped by category. When a requester picks an item in a category with a size mode of Clothing or Shoe, the matching size dropdown appears so they can specify a fit.
Categories are referenced by their label, which is snapshotted onto each request item. Deleting a category does not alter past requests — they keep the items they already captured. The form simply stops offering the deleted category going forward.
Managing the list
Go to Requests → Manage categories.
- Add — type a name, pick a size mode, then + Add.
- Rename — edit a category’s name; it saves when you click away or press Enter.
- Change size mode — pick a new mode from the dropdown next to the category.
- Reorder — use the up/down arrows. This order is the order requesters see on the form.
- Delete — use the × button. You’ll be asked to confirm; existing requests keep their items.
