Bulk-importing volunteers
CSV import. Use for cohort onboarding (e.g. a roster of returning volunteers at the start of a season).
Who this is for: Editor / Admin / Owner with volunteers.manage.
Steps
- Open Volunteers → Import.
- Download the template CSV — pre-filled with the expected columns:
first_name, last_name, email, phone, family_name, consent_tier, skills, notes. - Fill the CSV in your favorite spreadsheet tool.
- Upload. CartonCrew validates each row:
- Email format
- Consent tier in the enum
- Phone format (US, NANP)
- The preview shows which rows will import (green) vs which have errors (red) vs which are duplicates of existing volunteers (yellow — skipped).
- Confirm. CartonCrew creates the new records; duplicates are skipped; the audit log captures the import batch.

Common issues
- “Phone format invalid” — phones are required to be US (NANP) format. Strip leading + or country code.
- All rows marked as duplicates — your sheet’s email column matched existing records; the import skipped them. Check the existing records before importing again.
- Skills field doesn’t pick up tags — skills is free-text; tagging is separate (Volunteers detail → Skills → pick tags).
